New stockist and press

By Marceline | November 17, 2009

I’m sure you’re bored of hearing how busy I am so here is the news:

Loopy Lorna's

I have another new stockist, which is the marvellously named Loopy Lorna’s Tea House. It’s my first Edinburgh stockist and they’re situated in Morningside amongst lots of other lovely shops and a branch of Waitrose so ideal for an afternoon of shopping.

On offer will be items from my Cakeify and Friends range, including cards, notebooks and badges. They also have a range of exclusive teas and some amazing home baking to tempt you too. I came home with a lovely custard cream that was so enormous it took me two days to get through! Hope you can make it along sometime.

press

I’ve also had two web features this week – a featured seller interview on DaWanda and a nice feature on Print and Pattern. Check out my press page for more!

I’m off to London over the weekend for the Enterprise Nation Home Business conference. Should be an interesting day and we finally get to see our appearance in their documentary from earlier in the year. I just bought a shiny new iPhone so I may well be blogging and tweeting from the road. How exciting!

Last week of Modish Marketplace

By Marceline | November 24, 2008

It’s the last week of November’s Modish Holiday Marketplace so you’ve got just a few more days to snap up some bargains. All the shops taking part are offering special discounts and deals so now’s the time to pick up some gifts and save yourself some pennies. If you’ve been thinking about buying something from my shop then you can get yourself 10% off your order. You’ll find me under Accessories.

I’ve been in grand company this month so make sure you check out some of the other shops, like Shana Logic, Mod Retro, Wolfie and the Sneak, Little Flower Designs, Merulapie and Mudpuppy. Lovely stuff! I’m looking forward to seeing who’s taking part in December.

Johnny Come Lately

By Marceline | August 21, 2008

Johnny Come Lately, a lovely new gift shop in Aberdeen, is now stocking a range of my notebooks, keyrings, vintage button badge sets and gocco book hearts. They sell work by local art graduates and independent designers including lafamilia green, sidepony, petra boase, 16sparrows, haberdash house, sublime stitching, trixiedelicious, luii bags and blissen so it definitely looks worth a visit if you’re in the area. They don’t currently have a website but you can find out more at their Facebook group.

Here’s a few of the things I’ve sent up – look out for lots of new keyrings in my shop soon too; I’m just waiting for some supplies and then I can finish off some of the things I’ve been working on.

I’ve also set up a Google Map showing all my current stockists so you can see exactly where they are.

In other news:

1. I am interviewed today on the Glasgow Craft Mafia site. Find out all about my desert island essentials, my crafting highs and lows and what my favourite biscuits are. If anyone else wants to interview me, just ask. I love being interviewed. Here are some other interviews with me: The Morning News in 2002 and from Acid Logic in 2001. Sadly the ones I did with the BBC and Channel 4 are no longer online, damn them.

2. My events page has been updated with some upcoming markets starting next month. Get your diaries out! Also, how on earth can it nearly be September already?!

3. My good friend Alice of Peapods made an awesome video of her trip up to Glasgow with Sunnyvale Noise Sub-element for the diskant party. Depending on whether you were there or not, you can relive the fun or get a glimpse into what went on. There’s even a few appearances of me if you look hard enough. I’m the one in the black and grey stripey bunny top, of course.

Four weeks of Folksy

By Marceline | August 17, 2008

So, it’s been just over four weeks since I set up shop at Folksy.com (read my initial thoughts here). Bet you’re wondering how it’s all going?

Well, the first thing to say is how impressed I am at the changes the Folksy team have made in such a short time. They’ve been very attentive to everyone’s complaints and requests and have transformed the site. Bugs I’ve submitted have been fixed quickly and with a personal response from a real live human. This sort of thing really makes a difference and I think everyone who’s been offering suggestions feels like they’re being considered an important part of building Folksy. A lot of companies really understimate just how important this is, but if you’re relying on your users to promote the site then you need to listen to them and keep them involved and informed. I hope this continues once things get bigger.

From a sales point of view, my time at Folksy has been much more successful that I expected. I joined up to have a poke around and see if I could help with promoting something I thought was worthwhile. Listing fees I was prepared to consider as advertising.

How wrong I was! In four weeks I’ve sold 6 things and have 30 people who favourited me. Compare that with the 7 sales and 119 fans I’ve gained in 5 months at Etsy. Obviously neither are going to make me a millionaire but considering I don’t really promote either of these shops, and that they only have a small range of my products available, it’s a pretty good result from Folksy. The Folksy sales are even sweeter thanks to being commission free duting beta and not having to compete with hundreds of thousands of other sellers -if you leave your shop alone for a week, your items aren’t buried in the depths of the categories. I’ve also made a purchase (of Alistair’s new zine, yay) and found it all works pretty smoothly on the other end too.

I definitely plan to step up my promotion and product range on Folksy over the next few months and I hope you’ll come over and see how we’re all getting on. If you’re a UK seller you really should be giving it some thought.

jiji~punch

By Marceline | August 17, 2008

Just a quick post before I get back to sewing. My sister Nicolette finally got broadband so she’s been hard at work getting her crafty projects more organised. Using the name jiji~punch, she makes a whole lot of cute cards, knitted things, badges and felt toys, some of which you’ll have seen in my shop. I’ll still be selling a selection of her wares but she now also has her own Etsy shop for the full line-up.

Please go check out her shop and blog and say hello – there’s lots more coming so add her to your favourites!

Are you Folksy?

By Marceline | July 15, 2008

Good news everyone! There’s a new friendly place on the web to buy and sell handmade stuff in the UK. Folksy have been drifting around the online crafting community for quite a while now so I was excited to see they were finally able to launch the site last week.

Very much in the vein of Etsy and Dawanda, Folksy hosts individual shops run by users selling their handmade wares and picks out a selection of cool stuff for the home page. There’s also forums and a soon-to-launch tutorials section which looks very exciting.

Never one to miss something new on the internets, I signed up straightaway and listed a few things. As Folksy is very much in Beta, there were issues ahoy but the Folksy folks are very friendly and quick to help so the improvements have been piling up day by day. In many ways it’s a lot easier to use than Etsy and of course you get to list in British Pounds. It’s missing some of the more advanced features of Etsy but it’s early days yet – the most important thing is that Folksy are listening to its users and making changes daily to give us the best site they can.

If you’re a creative type based in the UK, I’d definitely recommend giving Folksy a try and letting them know what you think – listings cost 20p each but they’re commission free during the Beta phase. If you’re a fan of handmade things and sick of overseas sellers that won’t ship overseas and ridiculous customs charges then get on over for a browse. If you’ve ever been near the Etsy UKĀ  or UK Handmade groups you’re sure to recognise a few faces.

I for one welcome our new Folksy overlords. Best of luck to them.

Of course, you can have a look at my Folksy shop too. Be sure to friend me!
